Grassroots grantmaking is focused on people as active citizens in local communities, strengthening community democracy and expanding opportunities for people powered possibilities.

We describe the arena where people connect for mutual delight, mutual aid or collective action as the citizen sector. We belive that a strong citizen sector will not only result in better communities—communities that are more welcoming, vibrant, resilient, and just—but also in more effective government, more opportunity for businesses to form and prosper, and more effective non-profit service delivery.

The citizen sector is a place where we spend the other part of our life—where we are when we are not at work or in our home. It is where we connect with others, contribute our time, talent and treasure to make something that we care about happen, and look for rewards that are not associated with a paycheck.

Check out the resources in this section for books, articles, videos and podcasts—linked together by the common theme of citizen sector energy and possibilities.
